Structural Steel
All HMT tooling in this category is suitable for common grades of steel.
The HMT Versadrive ImpactaDie system is designed for creating or cleaning external threads on bolts, studs and threaded bar. This guide covers material suitability, suitable machines, workpiece preparation, lubrication, best practice and recommended impact torque for thread cutting and thread cleaning.
All HMT tooling in this category is suitable for common grades of steel.
This tooling is not generally suitable for hardened steel applications.
Suitable for harder materials such as stainless steel when used with reduced RPM and higher torque settings.
All HMT tooling in this category is suitable for non-ferrous materials.
| Machine | Suitable? | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Impact Wrench | Yes | Recommended for ImpactaDie threading applications. Use the correct torque setting for the die size and application. |
| Rotary Pistol Drill | No | ImpactaDie is not recommended for use with pistol drills. |
| Compact Magnet Drill | No | Not recommended. |
| Large Magnet / Pillar Drill | Limited / generally not recommended | These machines are generally not suitable for this threading application unless there is a very specific compatible setup. |
The ImpactaDie 115100 holder can create external threads up to approximately 50 mm in length.
The ImpactaDie 115900 holder can create external threads up to approximately 79 mm in length.
Recommended for ImpactaDie applications.
Not recommended for die threading.
Not normally recommended for ImpactaDie threading.
Suitable for use with impact wrenches. Refer to the correct torque guidance.
Not recommended.
Not normally applicable for ImpactaDie applications.
Not normally applicable for ImpactaDie applications.
Before cutting the thread, chamfer the end of the fastener or workpiece.
Use a suitable ImpactaBurr chamfer tool to create a consistent chamfer before threading.
Apply firm forward pressure to start and cut the thread.
When reversing the tool to remove the die threader from the fastener, reduce or remove the forward pressure.
There is no fixed number.
Tool life varies significantly depending on material, thread size, lubrication, torque, workpiece condition and operating technique.
Avoid lateral movement or tilting.
Do not use excessive feed pressure.
Keep the tool controlled and square to the workpiece.
Maintain a consistent flow of swarf.
Make sure the workpiece is correctly chamfered before threading.
Keep the Die Holder Collar and removable swarf area clean.
Use the Guide Collar and Guide to help keep the die aligned with the fastener or workpiece.
For difficult threading or re-threading applications, periodically check the Die and ImpactaDie Holder Collar and remove swarf as required.
Do not force the tool if the thread is not progressing correctly.
When re-threading an existing thread, take care to locate the die correctly in the existing thread before applying power.
Where possible, start the die by hand to ensure correct engagement before driving it with the impact wrench.
Recommended impact torque varies according to thread size and whether the operation is thread cutting or thread cleaning.
