Drill & Tap in one easy operation

VersaDrive® Heavy Duty Drill Taps are an industrial metalwork or fabrication tool for drilling and tapping heavy steel in one easy operation.

Primarily they are designed to be used with a reversible Magnet Drill, although they can also be adapted for use with an impact wrench to enlarge and tap existing holes.

With a drill point optimised for use in fixed drilling machines like Magnetic Drills or Pillar drills, these are not recommended for use in a pistol drill. Where they are to be used with an impact wrench to enlarge and tap holes pilot drilling is recommended with a separate drill bit.

Product Benefits

  • Impact Chipbreaker action for effective swarf evacuation
  • Heavy duty straight flute design creates a strong and durable tool
  • Ground flute twist drill creates the correct pilot hole size
  • Rated for heavy duty plate thicknesses
  • Industrial grade Titanium Nitride coating reduces heat buildup and burn-out
  • Use on Impact to prevent dangerous kickback caused by handheld rotary tools
  • Heavy-duty hex shank design for secure non-slip operation
  • Impact-rated due to dual hardening process - allows up to 15X faster speed than traditional methods

Quick Guide

  • Correct RPM is critical for good performance on larger drill taps
  • Ideal for use in Pillar Drills and Magnet Drills
  • For impact wrench use, pilot drilling the hole with a separate drill bit is necessary
  • Use appropriate lubrication and correct RPM to achieve long tool life

VersaDrive Heavy Duty DrillTaps

VersaDrive Heavy Duty DrillTaps FAQ Section
+
Q: Can I use my impact wrench with VersaDrive Drill Taps
VersaDrive Heavy Drill Taps are intended for use with heavy duty drilling machines with sufficient drilling torque and pressure. However they are specially hardened to allow them to be used with Impact Drivers and Wrenches. However the larger sizes of drill point should not be used with an impact wrench as they are too fast for these drill sizes. They are often used for drilling and tapping pre-drilled pilot holes or where a larger fixing size is required in an existing through hole or tapped hole.

Q: How many holes can I expect Heavy Duty Drill Taps to last
We have many customer reports and testimonials of Drill- taps lasting hundreds of holes or even more than a thousand. However our tools are often used in a tough environment, sometimes with less than ideal working conditions so it can vary widely depending on the application and the user life expectancy. If you are getting less than 100-200 holes per tap as a rule of thumb we can look at your application and most likely suggest some improvements to help increase life expectancy.

Q: Can I tap Stainless steel using VersaDrive Heavy Duty Drill Taps
Yes, Stainless Steel can be drill/tapped with no issues. For optimum tool life We recommend using reduced rotary RPM speeds, higher pressure and increased lubrication.

Q: Which Lubricant do you recommend for Impact Tapping
Speedlube is generally the best all purpose lubricant, for fast, convenient and accurate aerosol application ensuring coverage inside the hole as well as on the tool. However our BioCut paste is very popular and efficient lubricant for dipping the tool directly into the tin. It’s also great for minimising run off or mess, on painted surfaces or other sensitive applications where run off is to be avoided. Aeropaste can be used if working in applications such as Overhead where a fluid lubricant will run off. Finally BioCut Blue cutting fluid works particularly well with harder materials or difficult applications and is ideal forfor direct application onto the tool and into the hole when working on flat surfaces

Q: What Material Thickness can I Tap
As a rule of thumb, the maximum tapping thickness increases with the diameter of the thread, so it's in the region of 20-40mm for sizes M12-M24 or 1-1.5" for 1/2"-1"

Q: Can I use these for tapping Blind Holes
No Drill Taps cannot be used for Tapping Blind Holes as the drill point has to completely penetrate and exit the surface material before the threaded Tap can start cutting

Q: How can i access further technical support or submit a warranty claim for my VersaDrive Drill Tap
Please click here to access our product support area and warranty claim forms. If making a warranty claim please fill in the appropriate warranty form, providing us with as much of the requested information as possible and one of our technical team will review the feedback and be in touch shortly.
1. Best Practice Advice - How to get the best out of your 301130 Heavy Duty DrillTaps
+
  1. Impact Taps are recommended for through hole applications only.
  2. Pilot drill the exact tapping size hole for best results
  3. Select correct NM torque power for impact wrench applications
  4. Apply firm, steady feed pressure throughout the cut
  5. Ensure the Tap is inserted squarely to the hole - misaligned taps will greatly increase the risk of breakage.
  6. When tapping material thicker than 15-20mm, to speed up the process it is advisable to pilot drill the hole first, before drill-tapping the hole
  7. Ensure regular application of quality cooling lubricant, especially when drilling thick or hardened materials.
  8. Hardened or heat-affected materials may require higher torque, reduced RPM and feed rates and extra coolant
  9. Flame cut/punched holes will require more torque to tap than drilled holes due to heat build up. Caution: Sometimes flame cut holes do not have parallel sides meaning risk of tap breakage.
  10. Tap the hole in one pass where possible, applying adequate lubrication before you start.
  11. 301125- Sheet Metal Drill-Taps are intended for tapping material no greater than the tap diameter when driven with an impact wrench
  12. 301130- Heavy Duty Drill Taps are designed for use with Magnet Drills/Pillar Drills, or for tapping pre-drilled holes with an impact wrench. They are not designed for drill- tapping with hand-held rotary tools
2. Torque / RPM guide - Best Torque & RPM values for different sizes of hole and applications.
+

Use the tables below to identify the recommended Nm of Torque or RPM for your hole size and material.

Use Nm of Torque for tapping with Impact tooling.

Use RPM for tapping with Rotary tooling.

N.B. Impact Torque recommendations are the minimum required and for most applications additional torque is a benefit. For Impact applications where Torque values available do not offer an exact match to the table below select the closest available torque setting ABOVE the recommendation.

3. Powertool recommendations on Mild Steel
+

VersaDrive tooling can be used with a wide range of adapters that allow the products to be used across a variety of drive tools depending on the application required.

Below you will find the recommended adapters for the VersaDrive 301130 Heavy Duty DrillTap.

4. How to decide which Impact Wrench or Impact Driver to use?
+
  1. Identify the torque range (for the cutting tool) required using the data sheet in question 2. (Example M12 in 12mm plate – Guide torque 320Nm)
  2. Identify the torque range on your impact wrench or impact driver
  3. Look up model number to see torque range
  4. Check if there are speed/torque settings on the tool - Example
  5. Select the closest torque setting on the impact wrench/impact driver ABOVE the torque recommendation
(this is for the following 2 reasons)
    - Higher torque will only be used on demand
    - Too low torque will lead to the tool jamming or even snapping as the flutes stop cutting and the torque transfers to the tool

N.B. Impact drill-tapping is only recommended for standard 301125 DrillTaps. The larger 301130 Heavy Duty DrillTaps are designed to drill and tap with Magnet Drills and Pillar Drills or for tapping pre-drilled holes with an impact wrench.
